Change in future demand for this occupational group: one up

Trends in demand for this occupational group:

Demand will grow slightly as a result of many companies changing their modus operandi – from manufacturing to activities of a service nature (marketing, servicing, customer services etc.). The supply of the available workforce at the labour market will be sufficient – however, employers will face difficulties recruiting those applicants who fully satisfy the growing requirements for languages, soft skills and inter-disciplinary knowledge.

There will be a relatively good supply of people with tertiary qualifications in economics/business at the labour market. As in electrical engineering there will be a growing demand for other than technical skills, the proportion of economists and business specialists in total employment in the sector will tend to increase further. In the 2000-2007 alone their number in the sector increased more than four times. The truth is that even in these occupations the knowledge of technical aspects of development and manufacturing constitutes a great advantage. At present this knowledge is often insufficient, which worsens cooperation between manufacturing and development on the one hand and purchasing, sales and marketing on the other hand. Post-graduate courses focused on enhancing technical and inter-disciplinary knowledge in these occupations would help reduce this gap.

Skill needs required:

Organisational, negotiating and presentation skills predominate. A high level of language competencies is required due to frequent communication with foreign partners. Basic knowledge about the products manufactured is a must. Specialised skills are usually not necessary. Management is normally the “face” of a business. Managers represent the company in the external environment, conclude contracts, communicate with customers and create the corporate image. Internally, they formulate visions and strategies and manage business processes. In small and medium-sized enterprises it is necessary for managers to be able to handle more diverse management and strategic tasks. As distinct from this, managers in large companies can be more specialised. However, it is necessary that, in their work, they consider more external and internal factors as compared to smaller companies.
