Trends in demand for this occupational group:
Demand for these occupations will continue to grow for several years. However, this will be accompanied by large numbers of graduates entering the labour market. In the following period the growth in demand is expected to slow down. This will be influenced by the outsourcing of programming activities and by simplification of application development tools. Over the long term, demand for programmers and technicians should be replaced by demand for developers and analysts.
Skill needs required:
Programmers in the Czech Republic have achieved a good reputation over the last 15 years. However, the new generation of programmers will face competition from Eastern Europe and Asia. Moreover, there will be decreasing demands for the programming time in newly developed products. This is why the knowledge of programming languages is a necessary but not only precondition for finding employment in this field. In addition to programming, knowledge of the business area for which the programme is designed is required.
Programmers will most frequently find jobs in specialised development companies where they will carry out ICT tasks for businesses in the electrical engineering sector. Programmers form part of teams consisting of business analysts and SW architects (coming from either the home company or from the customer ’s enterprise). Therefore they must be able to work in a team, to understand the assignment within its broader context and, partly, to propose improvements.
