Czech unemployment up 0.2 pts to 8.7 pct in July -ministry /09. 08. 2010/
Prague - Unemployment in the Czech Republic grew by 0.2 percentage point to 8.7 percent in July after falling for four straight months, the Labour and Social Affairs Ministry announced today.
Labour offices registered 505,284 jobless as of July 31, 4,784 more than at end-June. Year-on-year, the number of unemployed grew by 19,965. Analysts had expected such development. They believed unemployment would grow due to the inflow of fresh school graduates to labour offices. Labour offices at end-July had in their files 495,276 unemployed ready to start to work immediately, 7,543 more than a month earlier and 19,716 more than in July 2009.
A total of 55,634 job seekers newly registered at employment offices during July, a growth of 6,846 month-on-month. Compared with July 2009, the number fell by 14,588. A total of 50,850 job seekers left employment offices' files in July, 12,217 fewer than in the previous month and 2,382 more than in July 2009.
Only two labour offices reported a growth in unemployment in June but 57 labour offices saw an increase in July, while 20 registered a fall. The highest growth in the jobless rate was in the districts of Prague and Prague-east (both by 3.3 percent), Mlada Boleslav, central Bohemia (+3.1 percent) and Brno-mesto (2.9 percent). The biggest fall was in the districts of Jindrichuv Hradec, southern Bohemia (-2.1 percent), Cesky Krumlov, southern Bohemia, and Tachov, western Bohemia (both -2 percent).
The number of unemployed fresh school graduates and people under 18 reached 24,861, 856 more than in June and 3,382 more than in July 2009. They contributed 4.9 percent to the total unemployment figure, 0.1 percentage point more than in June. There was also good news in June, namely a growth in the number of vacancies. Labour offices registered 33,479 vacancies, 552 more than in June.
There are currently 15.1 job seekers on average in the Czech Republic. The district of Decin, northern Bohemia, with 55.8 job seekers per available job tops the list, followed by Karvina, northern Moravia (53.9), Teplice, northern Bohemia (46.5) and Trebic, southern Moravia (43.9). There were 15.2 job seekers per vacancy on average in June.
