Trends in demand for this occupational group:
IS/IT Managers will be increasingly demanded in years to come and they will be in short supply at the labour market. Inter-disciplinary knowledge (i.e. a better capacity to see ICT in the context of the overall business operations and needs) will become an ever more important part of skills of ICT managers. Problems related to a low quality or capacity of human resources in ICT may be partly addressed through outsourcing, but ICT management must stay within the control of the company and their significance will be increasingly stressed.
Skill needs required:
In addition to advanced IT knowledge people in these jobs must be well acquainted with business processes and able to anticipate future requirements in relation to the development and capacity of the company ’s IT. There are high demands as regards management and communication skills – these are required both from the company management (pursuing new development trends) and staff (training and motivation to use new ICT solutions), and from external suppliers in the event of outsourcing selected services or whole projects.
IS/IT manager ensures flawless operation of IT infrastructure including elimination of ad hoc problems. An increasing number of business processes require a 24/7 operation (continual manufacturing, JIT logistics systems, night operation, energy supplies, etc.). People in these jobs must have basic knowledge of the technical configuration of ICT solutions. However, the most important skill consists in capturing the broader context of a problem, tackling emergency situations and managing ICT engineers who actually eliminate the problem.
